Achilles Tendon Disorders
Conditions We Treat
What is the Achilles Tendon?
A tendon is a band of tissue that connects a muscle to a bone.
Achilles Tendonitis
An inflammation of the Achilles tendon and is typically short-lived.
Achilles Tendonosis
The results of untreated Achilles Tendonitis. It progresses to a degeneration of the tendon, where it loses its organized structure.
Symptoms
Symptoms associated with both Achilles Tendonitis and Achilles Tendonosis include:
• Pain
• Tenderness
• Enlarged tendon or nodules
Causes
As “overuse” disorders, Achilles tendonitis and tendonosis are usually caused by a sudden increase of repetitive activity involving the Achilles tendon.
Diagnosis
The foot and ankle surgeon will examine the patient’s foot and ankle and evaluate the range of motion and condition of the tendon.
Treatment
Treatment options may include the following in early stages:
• Immobilization
• Ice
• Oral medications
• Physical therapy
